[Book Your Free Consultation ↗](https://ventacore.com.au/contact?topic=finance)[Call 03 8400 0092](tel:+61384000092) ## What we look at first - Multi-factor sign-in on email and every system that holds client data - Protection against fake invoices and payment-redirection emails - Secure ways to send and receive client documents, instead of email attachments - Who can open which client files, and whether former staff still can - Rules for using AI tools with client information - Backups kept in Australia and tested ## Rules worth knowing - **Tax file numbers.** If you hold tax file numbers, a serious data breach involving them has to be reported to the OAIC, whatever your turnover. - **Anti-money laundering laws.** Since 1 July 2026, lawyers, conveyancers and accountants that provide certain services, such as handling property deals or setting up companies and trusts, have obligations under the AML/CTF Act. For the information they handle under those laws, the Privacy Act applies whatever their turnover, including reporting serious data breaches. - **Financial services licensees.** AFS licensees must have adequate risk management systems, and the Federal Court has found that this includes cyber security (ASIC v RI Advice Group, 2022). In February 2026, the court ordered FIIG Securities to pay a $2.5 million penalty over cyber security failures that let client data, including tax file numbers, be stolen. - **Ransomware payments.** Businesses turning over more than $3 million must report a ransomware payment to the Australian Signals Directorate within 72 hours. *This is general information, not legal advice.
